The spur gear drive have two main functions – to transmit power with minimal loss of energy, or to transmit or convert angular velocity. When the drive is made of a rack and pinion, the angular velocity of the gear is converted into linear speed of the rack and vice versa. The transmitted angular or linear velocity depends on the number of teeth of the gears engaged in the drive.
